Orbis Mesh is pleased to announce our first Mesh Network install within the private sector. This is a monumental moment in our product development as it signals our transition from research and development to producing a scalable, ready for market product. The technology now has the capability to do more than monitor environmental measurements but can operate any type of equipment using RF mesh technology.
The company we have partnered with develops a Smart City Technology which uses cellular networks to control custom made solar light crosswalks. This technology allows individuals to relay autonomous commands to crosswalks within an area, giving communities the power to independently tailor crosswalk safety to meet specific traffic patterns or sudden changes. This is smart city technology at its finest. What is smart city technology? Techopedia defines it as “…incorporat(ing) information and communication technologies (ICT) to enhance the quality and performance of urban services such as energy, transportation and utilities in order to reduce resource consumption, wastage and overall costs. The overarching aim of a smart city is to enhance the quality of living for its citizens through smart technology.“. This company is a prime example of creating custom community solutions using technology that was not possible a decade ago.
However this technology is reliant on one centralized and controlling factor: a cellular network. The dream of Smart City Technology is the creation of systems which rely and build on one another, not systems built around a cellular giant with the ability to control the operational viability of them. Not only would a telecommunication giant control whether the network could work, but it also collects air time charges for network usage, which could charge communities service fees that run into the thousands per annum. This is where Orbis Mesh comes in. We bring the ability to completely cut the cord, even from cellular networks. In our pilot install, we successfully installed a working Mesh Network within their crosswalk technology, which let us control the lights using only a 2.4GHz radio frequency connection. This means that the lights can work exactly the same way they did before, but completely eliminating the need for any cellular connection. This puts control of the crosswalks 100% in the communities hands with a completely decentralized network.
Gerry Wight, head of Orbis Mesh Business Development stated “What makes this exciting is that we can monitor and operate any type of equipment as opposed to strictly monitoring temperature or humidity“. What’s important to take away from this statement is that Orbis Mesh is not in the sensor business, we’re in the Mesh Networking business. Using a custom PCB with Orbis Mesh firmware, our technology can be installed or incorporated into any existing monitoring or operation system within a fixed area. Meaning that using Mesh Networking within those systems make cables, satellite or cellular based networks are made to be redundant for Smart City Technology.
